Change Your Word Change Your Results

It is really easy to use langue without actually thinking about what we’re saying.

Early in my fitness journey I remember seeing someone suggest that we stop using the language “working out” and instead refer to what we do as “training". It might seem like a small difference, but how we mentally approach what we do has very physical results.

If I look at my gym in the gym as “working out”, then it’s a singular moment in my day that comes and goes. After you leave the gym, it’s over, until you enter the gym again

If I look at my time as “training”, then I’m looking at using that time in the gym as enhancing everything that happens outside the gym. My training doesn’t just stay in the gym, I take it with me everywhere I go. It’s not longer optional, because it’s what makes every thing else I do better.

Let’s take another commonly used word: rest days. I no longer use the word rest days. Instead I refer to them as recovery days. It’s easy to get lazy on rest days, thinking that laying on the couch and doing nothing will help move the needle forward. When I think about my days away from the gym as recovery days, I’m still getting the necessary rest needed to hit the next day, but I’m also actively moving still. On recovery days I’m making sure to get some walks in, active stretching and mobility, and I’m staying active.

Stick around for a while and you’ll hear us constantly trying to encourage each other to rethinking the language we use.

Let’s get those training days in. Let’s get those recovery days in. Let’s keep moving the needle forward so we can burn brighter for our families, friends, and communities.
